Community Language Program Summer Session A 2013
Advanced English Level One
My students came from a varied linguistic, national and cultural backgrounds. All were in the United States either for temporary employment, study, or as permanent immigrants. They were exposed to a communicative approach wherein a variety of collaborative activities elicited the use of all skills in an integrated manner. Authentic materials were introduced regularly to reinforce and display relative language in everyday contexts. I used the textbook In Charge as the curriculum for the class and wrote regular assessment exams to measure their progress. I make it a priority to teach my learners to be autonomous. The capstone project was a written essay about American Stereotypes.
